Project Schedule/Highlights
Project Schedule
- Physical work on the bridge began on September 7, 2007, working from the Rockland County shore replacing the deck from span 1 to 21. This segment was completed on the northbound and southbound spans.
- After a three-month winter shutdown, work resumed on March 3, 2008. Since that time, all of the northbound and southbound spans have been replaced on the western causeway. On the main span, 70 of 72 bays have been replaced in both directions.
- Since the start of construction (September 2007), a total of 1080 new deck panels have been installed, including 280 on the main span of the bridge and all 664 on the western causeway.
- For 2009, the deck replacement will continue on on the west deck truss and main span in both directions.
Project Highlights
- Deck replacement work has been scheduled primarily between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. to minimize the impact on motorists.
- Twenty-two percent (22%) of the deck has already been replaced under previous contracts. This project will replace an additional 40 percent of the deck, focusing on the most critical areas including the lanes that bear the most truck traffic.
- To address any deterioration of the steel, and to expedite the work, the steel under the deck, safety walk and rail will also be replaced as it is faster to cut away both the deck and steel together than to remove only the deck.
- Four of seven lanes will be replaced by using a prefabricated superstructure system.
- Deck replacement materials are being manufactured off-site, improving quality, reducing noise on site, lowering costs and shortening the duration of the project.
