The contracting firm of KETCO, Inc. of Glenmont, New York completed construction work on the first contract. This phase included the construction of new exit and entrance ramps between I-84 Eastbound and Route 300; a new traffic signal on Route 300; and extending and widening the northbound Thruway exit ramp. The work was completed at a cost of $5.5 million.
Construction Contract Phase 2
Phase 2 of the I-84/87 Interchange Reconstruction Project is almost complete. Sitework and utility work has been completed, as well as the new combined maintenance building, two new salt sheds, a cold storage building, a vehicle storage building, and a State Police building. In addition, access roads and stormwater detention ponds have been completed.
The new toll facilities that include a new toll utility building, separate entering and exiting toll plazas with high-speed E-ZPass, and covered walkways between the plazas and the toll utility building are also complete. In addition, roadway tie-ins to the Phase 3 work are nearly complete. Environmentally friendly "green" technology has also been incorporated into the design of the buildings to enhance energy efficiency.
The $48.0 million contract was let on November 24, 2004. Construction work commenced in March 2006 by The Pike Company, from Rochester, New York. The new entering toll plaza is expected to open in July 2009. The new exiting plaza is expected to open in September 2009.
Construction Contract Phase 3
Phase 3 of the I-84/87 Interchange Reconstruction Project is also well underway.
The $66.6 million contract for Phase 3 was awarded to A Servidone, Inc./B. Anthony Construction Corporation, (Joint Venture) from Castleton, New York. Construction work commenced in March 2007.
The third phase includes the construction of all remaining roadways, ramps, and bridges in the interchange, directly connecting I-84 to I-87. All six new bridges in the project are completed. An existing bridge widening is also complete. The contract also provides for the installation of two traffic signals on Route 300 and construction of a new larger tandem lot. This phase of the project is almost complete, with the new direct connection between I-84 and I-87 in service by the Fall of 2009.
