Thruway Authority Announces Interchange 17 Reconstruction Project to Necessitate Ramp Closures and Traffic Stoppages on I-84

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced that steel work being conducted as part of the Interchange 17 Reconstruction Project will necessitate ramp closures and periodic traffic stoppages on I-84 beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday April 21, 2008, weather permitting.

The I-84 Exit 7S ramp (Union Ave, NY 300, Thruway I-87) closures will be in place eastbound near Interchange 17 (Newburgh, I-84, Route 17K, Stewart Airport), weather permitting. During the temporary closures, traffic will be detoured to Exit 7N.

The closures scheduled to begin on Monday, April 21 are outlined below:   

  • 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday, April 21
  • 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 22
  • 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 23 until 6:00 a.m. Thursday, April 24
  • 8:00 p.m. Thursday April 24 until 6:00 a.m. Friday, April 25

During the ramp closures, periodic traffic stoppages on I-84 will also be necessary in both directions. The stoppages are expected to last no more than 10 minutes each, and are outlined below:

  • 9:00 p.m. Wednesday April 23 until 5:00 a.m. Thursday, April 24
  • 9:00 p.m. Thursday April 24 until 5:00 a.m. Friday, April 25

The Authority has activated its Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) and placed Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) in advance of the closures to advise motorists of the closures and traffic stoppages. Motorists are reminded to tune to Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) 1610 AM for updates.

The work is being completed by A. Servidone/B. Anthony Construction Corporation of Castleton, New York and is scheduled to be completed by November 2009.

The Authority appreciates motorists’ patience while this essential project moves forward.
