Thruway Tug Captain The New York Division has a vacancy at the Tappan Zee Bridge.
Duties
The successful candidate would operate and pilot a diesel-powered tugboat vessel at the Tappan Zee Bridge on the Hudson River. The Tug Captain is responsible for proper operation and piloting when underway; directs the movement and placement of a 35-ton crane barge and other floating plant used in the replacement of timber piling, ice breakers, fenders, caissons and piers; and delivers materials and personnel to work sites. Tug Captains are also responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the vessel assigned to them.
Qualifications
Candidates must possess a license as a master of towing vessel with endorsements for inland, ocean, or near coastal waters;
OR
A license as a United States Coast Guard master of towing vessel, limited for the area (as determined by the Officer in Charge of Marine Inspections at the U.S. Coast Guard [OCMI]). All Coast Guard licenses shall be rated for vessels that weigh at least 100 gross registered tons;
OR
Be a mariner licensed as a master of inspected, self-propelled vessels greater than 200 gross registered tons (GRT) holding either a completed Towing Officer's Assessment Record (TOAR) bearing the signature of a Designated Examiner and stating that the Examiner found the candidate proficient for a license endorsed for towing*;
AND
Four (4) years of experience as the pilot of a towing vessel. A valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State is also required.
*Commercial assistance towing is not satisfactory to meet the qualification.
Salary ranges from $17.05 to $24.26 per hour plus $1.51 per hour location pay.
