Starting wages range from $12.25 to $17.30 depending on the position location and trainee level.

Location pay will be added to the base salary for Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Dutchess and Putnam counties.

Thruway Maintenance Worker Traineeship Program consists of 3 levels depending on experience and knowledge.

Trainee Level 1 (for vacancies in Orange, Rockland & Westchester Counties)
is a 36 month traineeship:

Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a valid New York State Commercial Drivers license Class B permit or an equivalent issued by another state.

Trainee Level 2 is a 24 month traineeship:

Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a Commercial Drivers license Class B with tank endorsement and air brakes, 6 months experience operating construction equipment and/or vehicles
AND
12 months experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork or other trade related bridge construction or repair
OR
Possession of a valid Commercial Drivers license Class B with tank endorsement and air brakes and 18 months experience operating construction equipment and/or other commercial vehicles.

Trainee Level 3 is a 12 month traineeship:

Possession of a Commercial Drivers License Class B with tank endorsement and air brakes
AND
12 months experience operating construction equipment and/or vehicles
AND
18 months experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork or other trade related to bridge construction or repair.

Journey Level or fully qualified candidates must meet the following qualifications:

• Possession of a New York State Commercial Drivers license Class B with tank endorsement and air brakes
  AND
  
• One year experience operating construction equipment and/or vehicles and either two (2) years experience in carpentry, masonry, ironwork, welding, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair
  OR
• Completion of a 2 year technical school course in carpentry, masonry, ironwork, welding or other trade related to bridge construction or repair,
  OR
• Completion of a high school technical course in carpentry, masonry, ironwork, welding or other trade related to bridge construction or repair and 12 months experience in bridge construction or repair.
